This is a great base for many chickpea recipes, and dried beans are much cheaper than canned.

If you do want to remove the garlic cloves, you should probably do that before you drain them. The bay leaves are easy enough to find and remove, but the smashed garlic cloves just fell apart and it wasn't worth it to remove them. (They're perfectly edible and it turned out fine in the recipe I used these for.)
