Croque Monsieur Casserole
Dinner in French
This one was messy and hard to figure out how to serve, but delicious! I'm just not sure it's any less work than the standard Croque Monsieur, even for a crowd.
You basically make a ham and cheese (gruyere!) sandwich with dijon mustard, just like for the original. And for this, you cut them in half, stack them cut side up in a casserole dish, and cover with mornay sauce (bechamel with added cheese) and THEN top it with even more cheese. Bake that until everything is warm and bubbly and the cheese gets brown on top, and it's ready to serve.
I decided to try to serve this by separating out the sandwich halves, which was pretty difficult, and I'm not sure it was the right decision. Maybe it would have been better to just cut a square like a lasagne? I'm not sure, but if you try it let me know!
