Sesame (Benne) Wafers
Deep Run Roots
Please excuse this one; we didn't film this part to be separate from the rest of the dish in the book (Warm Banana Pudding, coming next week!) but...y'all, it was a lot. A lot a lot, and I was recently back from a long trip and not really into the routine of regular life yet. This recipe on top of normal life AND the fourth of July felt like just Too Much. But my son had a life-changing experience with warm banana pudding, and so I decided to make it anyway.
Mistakes were made. It made WAY more than we needed, the bananas were too ripe for my tastes, the banana puree wasn't nearly as smooth after being in the refrigerator, the meringue deflated before I was ready for it... I think I could do better, but since my family doesn't love the sesame seed wafers in the pudding (the texture more than the flavor) I probably won't be doing that. And I just realized while getting this video ready to post that I have failed almost every banana recipe on this channel
Also, I don't think I mentioned it at all while filming, but the recipe calls for either benne or sesame seeds. These are the same species, but benne is an heirloom variety with a slightly different flavor. I haven't ever found benne in a store, though I am sure you can source them on the internet...somewhere. Sesame seeds are fine.
