Chocolate Fig Gravy

If you're not from a very specific region, and your family never made this, it sounds very, very weird. Chocolate...gravy?? Never mind the figs, just that is enough to raise eyebrows. But if you think of it as a chocolate dessert sauce -- not quite hot fudge, but similar -- you'll have an idea of what it really is.

If you're familiar with milk gravy, this adds sugar and cocoa powder to take it on a sweet side trip...and you probably want to leave out the black pepper usually associated with that, too. Instead, it's replaced with some warm spices. Figs here are an uncommon addition, but they're not unwelcome.
