Governor Tryon’s Humble Crumble Apple Pie
Outlander Kitchen
I love an apple crisp, though I am ambivalent about apple pie. This recipe is basically an apple crisp (or crumble, I guess, since there are no oats in the topping) made inside a pie crust. I do think a crumble topping is easier to accomplish than a top crust, but I don't really love making a pie crust in general and I still have to make one for this.
The flavor is pretty good; the Granny Smith apples are tart, but the crumble topping sweetens it up just enough (a little vanilla ice cream helps, too.) They also held together well, unlike in the Tarte Tatin we made recently using the same variety. (https://cookwithheather.com/Outlander-Kitchen-Tarte-Tatin/)
My family didn't love it, though my kids say the crust was the best part. So I guess we're still on the lookout for our family-favorite apple dessert recipe!
I found a google doc with this recipe here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/19E9VR0ZfI5jqBpVzky3f0AhfwJtS70xkk4ij73SnRkc/edit?tab=t.0
