House Black Daal

The House Black Daal recipe in this book gets rave reviews, so it had to be one of the first ones we tried. It's time consuming, as cooking whole, dry beans generally is, but not very complicated. If you already have the garam masala and the garlic and ginger paste (we've made both on the channel already) it's mostly just waiting while it bubbles on the stove.
It was good, but didn't blow my socks off like the Chicken Ruby did, but honestly, I think it probably needed more salt. And maybe a little more garam masala, maybe more tomato? It just wasn't as flavorful as I expected from the rave reviews.
