Kid Juice & Adult Juice
Deep Run Roots
If you have a bunch of muscadine grapes (lucky you!), you can make these juices from Deep Run Roots. The adult juice is NOT alcoholic, but there's a vinegar tang so kids may not enjoy it. Heck, some adults may not enjoy it. (My crew chief says it mixes well with vodka, if that's your thing!) It takes some time to mature, but if you process it in a hot water bath as the recipe instructs, it will last quite a while. We got some Real Kids to try the kid juice so you can see their reaction!

[00:08]: recipe but we're not going to be able to
[00:10]: try it for like two or three weeks
[00:13]: so we're working from the run roots
[00:16]: cookbook and it is
[00:17]: muscadine grape season again so we are
[00:20]: going to make
[00:21]: kid juice and adult juice and i'm glad
[00:24]: that i have two
[00:25]: different um jars here because then
[00:28]: we'll know which ones which
[00:30]: but i can also label them it's fine uh
[00:34]: so it's a really easy recipe i have
[00:35]: everything we need right here
[00:37]: she does make the recipe makes four
[00:40]: times
[00:40]: as much like four quarts instead of
[00:44]: one each i'm just making one each
[00:47]: because
[00:48]: that's what i want to do i don't anyway
[00:50]: never tried it before don't have enough
[00:52]: grapes to make
[00:53]: all of it so we're just gonna make one
[00:56]: quart of each today
[00:59]: and it's really simple i've got some
[01:00]: boiling water here and
[01:03]: that i've just heated up in the
[01:04]: microwave because i don't have
[01:06]: an electric kettle or anything because
[01:08]: we don't do a lot of tea
[01:10]: or anything like that so we add some
[01:13]: sugar
[01:13]: to each of these and you can see i have
[01:16]: a mixture of
[01:18]: the bronze ones and the purple ones i
[01:20]: was glad to be able to get the purple
[01:22]: ones
[01:23]: because those will definitely make it
[01:25]: prettier it'll be a
[01:27]: nice pretty purple juice so we've got
[01:30]: sugar in both of them
[01:32]: the adult juice is not alcoholic i know
[01:34]: we've done alcoholic
[01:35]: recipes a lot on this channel but this
[01:38]: one is not alcoholic but it is more like
[01:40]: a shrub
[01:41]: which means this is some vinegar this is
[01:44]: a white
[01:44]: wine vinegar i almost
[01:48]: i was i wasn't sure that i had um
[01:53]: enough white wine vinegar vinegar but i
[01:55]: did end up having enough and
[01:56]: if but if i didn't i do have some
[01:58]: champagne vinegar
[01:60]: i think that would have been fine and
[02:02]: now i just
[02:03]: fill them up the rest of the way with
[02:05]: hot water with the boiling water so i'm
[02:07]: going to go ahead and fill this
[02:08]: one up and then fill this one up
[02:18]: so i might let that let the sugar
[02:21]: dissolve um i don't think she
[02:25]: mentions stirring these up or anything
[02:28]: but i've got a lot of bubbles coming up
[02:30]: from the sugar dissolving
[02:31]: um so i'm going to kind of leave them
[02:35]: out for a little bit
[02:37]: let me read just make sure she doesn't
[02:39]: say anything about that i'm pretty sure
[02:40]: she does
[02:42]: no mention of um stirring these up but i
[02:46]: think i'm going to
[02:47]: get a knife a butter knife just because
[02:49]: it'll go down in there easy
[02:51]: i just want to make sure i get enough
[02:53]: water in here so i just want to make
[02:54]: sure that we're not gonna
[02:56]: like because the sugar kind of dissolves
[02:58]: into the water and gets um
[03:01]: takes up less space once it's dissolved
[03:04]: so i just want to
[03:05]: make sure we don't have any more air
[03:07]: bubbles in there and it looks like i can
[03:08]: add a little bit more water in here
[03:14]: so add a little bit more now
[03:23]: she processes these in a hot water
[03:28]: bath um i'm not gonna do that
[03:31]: because i just have these two and it's
[03:33]: hard for me i don't have a good
[03:36]: pot to process two jars of
[03:40]: two quart sized jars i would have to get
[03:43]: out my
[03:44]: huge pot and i don't have a regular
[03:47]: canner it it's a thing we don't
[03:50]: can quartz very often we usually do like
[03:53]: half pints or pints whatever
[03:57]: those we can handle these not so much um
[03:60]: so what i'm gonna do
[04:01]: i'm gonna let these i'm gonna put the
[04:03]: lids on and let them come to room
[04:05]: temperature
[04:06]: i'll like cool down and then i'm gonna
[04:08]: just put them in the refrigerator
[04:11]: but we're gonna have to wait two to
[04:14]: three weeks
[04:16]: before we can try so i guess we'll see
[04:18]: you in two to three weeks
[04:30]: on this episode of cooking the books

[04:37]: so i have some of my crew here
[04:41]: um nine year old and a six year old
[04:44]: almost ten and seven they're growing so
[04:47]: fast
[04:48]: to try their our kid juice they could
[04:50]: try the adult juice too if they wanted
[04:51]: it is not alcoholic
[04:53]: it is more like a shrub there's vinegar
[04:55]: in it they do not want to
[04:57]: my husband also is not thrilled about
[05:00]: the shrub does not like vinegary drinks
[05:02]: so we have a very
[05:05]: we have a very small shot glass here for
[05:08]: him to try
[05:09]: out of and then we have some little
[05:12]: glasses
[05:12]: here for us to try um
[05:16]: so first i'm going to pour our kid juice
[05:19]: i think i'm just going to use
[05:22]: this to keep the this lid to keep the
[05:24]: grapes from going into
[05:26]: the glass as i pour
[05:30]: looks like water it does look like water
[05:33]: doesn't it
[05:35]: all right so we have our kid tasters
[05:38]: this is a bit
[05:39]: pink like that's like more pink than
[05:41]: that it's the same color
[05:43]: it came from the same thing my
[05:46]: eyes are this is going to take this
[05:50]: tastes disgusting i'm gonna tell you
[05:54]: they keep an open mind
[05:58]: it kind of does taste good it kind of
[05:60]: does taste good what does it taste like
[06:02]: grapes grapes what do you think those
[06:04]: are grape juice it is
[06:06]: it calls on muscadines because i can
[06:09]: read
[06:11]: they are muscadines uh
[06:14]: and there's sugar in there it's very
[06:17]: sweet
[06:18]: it's very sweet is it good it's sweet
[06:20]: and sad
[06:21]: sweet and sour at the same time so what
[06:23]: do we think it's kind of impossible to
[06:25]: make
[06:26]: no it's not it was very easy we we
[06:29]: didn't can hours though you can
[06:32]: we let it sit at room temperature for
[06:36]: like
[06:36]: a day or two and then we put it in the
[06:39]: refrigerator and it's been in there for
[06:42]: probably four weeks at this point um
[06:45]: she says at least three weeks so um
[06:48]: you didn't even make it so why do you
[06:50]: think it's impossible
[06:54]: anyway so it was pretty easy what do we
[06:56]: think would we drink this
[06:58]: i think it tastes like grapes tastes
[07:01]: good
[07:01]: you think it tastes good so we got two
[07:03]: thumbs up
[07:04]: for the for the kid juice
[07:07]: and now the adults are gonna try the
[07:10]: adult juice
[07:11]: i'm probably the only one who's gonna do
[07:12]: it on camera can i stay here
[07:15]: you can stay right there if you'd like
[07:16]: would you like to try the adult juice ah
[07:18]: sure you can try mine after i did after
[07:20]: i do
[07:21]: all right so we're gonna i'm gonna pour
[07:24]: out the
[07:24]: oh we're gonna be a little yes
[07:29]: i was not as good kind of orange
[07:32]: this one does not pour as well but my
[07:34]: husband doesn't want much so
[07:37]: we're gonna slide this back to the to
[07:39]: the crew
[07:41]: and i'm gonna take this now the vinegar
[07:44]: one
[07:45]: um definitely turned a little more pink
[07:49]: um got a little more of the color from
[07:51]: the grapes the kid juice is a lot less
[07:53]: pink than i expected
[07:55]: it's orange
[08:00]: very vinegary it is it is very vinegary
[08:04]: it's got it hits you you know in the
[08:06]: back of your tongue like a vinegar does
[08:08]: but it's also very sweet is
[08:13]: a little bit like pickles you can go
[08:16]: outside
[08:18]: a little bit like pickles it's more like
[08:20]: a sweet pickle you know you get the
[08:26]: grapes but it's not
[08:27]: super grapey because of the vinegar i
[08:29]: think would you like to taste it
[08:31]: sure can i taste yours
[08:38]: i'll have to get my own
[08:47]: okay i think that's a no from the kid
[08:51]: uh what about the other adult in the
[08:52]: room so he doesn't hate it as much as he
[08:55]: thought he would
[08:56]: he does mention is very astringent a
[08:58]: little bit like some wine but definitely
[09:00]: from the vinegar
[09:03]: i would i'm interested if i could find
[09:05]: something some way to use this
[09:07]: in something like maybe an actual adult
[09:10]: drink
[09:11]: but uh i don't i don't hate it
[09:15]: i'm i'm wondering if it's gonna grow on
[09:17]: me
